HEXAHOME

Hexahome is a modular housing system inspired by the current refugee crisis in Europe. Button Studios in collaboration with Outsyde Projects has taken an Open Source design system called the Hexayurt and engineered it for cold climates. The original Hexayurt system was invented by Vinay Gupta as a flexible temporary shelter for regions in crisis. The Hexahome is an attempt to convert the Hexayurt into a warm, secure, and lasting home designed for cold climates.
Expandable - Modular - Flexible
The Hexayurt system allows for expansion of space through simple changes to the design. The Hexahome takes the Hexayurt’s expandability to allow more interior space by simply adding extension modules between end caps. The flexibility of the design allows for many variations to be developed according to the changing needs of the refugees. Buildings can be modified to become larger even after construction. The system can be flat packed and shipped with ease. It functions as a construction kit and can be assembled by workers with little or no experience in construction.
It can be chain linked in rows to establish larger shared spaces, or to establish organic building layouts. The versatility of a 6 walled design, which can be removed in order to combine spaces, allows for infinite structural variations to create shared social spaces and facilitate resource sharing between buildings. The combination of buildings increases structural integrity allowing for the creation of larger extensions, and superstructure compositions. When housing compositions allow people to establish communities parts of the population can become more independent and less burdensome on administration and infrastructure.
