room x room
Room x Room applies the notion of modular architecture to units inside of larger host structures. The standard approach to a building's construction is to utilize the walls of a building for multiple systems that serve different functions. The fact is that the functions of a buildings wall are very different from each other in exterior and interior application. If you separate the intentions behind the elements of a building construction, it can be possible to isolate and minimize costs on over all construction. Once a host structure is established, the development of the interior can go Room by Room
The crisis relief format of Room x Room aims to design housing that serves as temporary accommodation within a larger established host structure.
The host structure can be an already existing warehouse, or a newly erected structure such as an Inflatable dome.

The fundamental elements of insulation, water proofing, and sanitation provided by the host structure allows for the guest housing to be built much faster at significant lower costs
While developing housing around considerations of the current Refugee crisis in Europe, we are taking this opportunity to develop affordable housing as an evolutionary system. The central idea is to create modular guest housing units that are integrated within a larger host structure that can evolve to become independent and autonomous dwellings at a later date. The guest unit construction can be very light, and consist of bare necessities to enable the inhabitants to be comfortable and secure while their individual home depends on the more insulated and equipped surrounding super structure.
This will allow for the supplier of the housing under the current crisis scenario to build more homes at a faster rate for a lower cost. It also enables a greater flexibility for the inhabitants to move to another location and be more independent. As the guest becomes more independent and able to afford their own modifications, the guest unit can be modified in order to adequately handle the outside climate.

Room x Room can also serve as a smaller unit to work in conjunction with a shipping container. The main construction of the home would be built inside of the modular movable unit, including utilities and sleeping quarters, once the unit is removed the container serves as an empty free space to be used in a variety of ways.
